Bangor University Legal Advice Clinic (BULAC)

For Clients

We provide legal advice on most civil areas of law including family law, employment, housing, property matters, personal injury and consumer issues. We do not advise on criminal law, welfare benefits or immigration.

A small team of student advisers will take instructions from clients via an interview, will carry out relevant research and will provide their advice via a formal letter within two weeks of the initial appointment. All advice will be approved by a qualified solicitor holding a practising certificate.

Clients will be interviewed by two student advisors (accompanied by their supervisor). No advice is given on the day. The students will take instructions, carry out research and a formal letter of advice will be provided to the client within 14 days of the appointment, once approved by a qualified solicitor.

Students are intensively trained in confidentiality and data protection and sign a student advisor contract agreeing to abide by our strict procedures.

The service can be offered in Welsh and English. If clients do require the service to be conducted in Welsh, then prior notification of this must be provided so that Welsh speaking academics are available on the day of the appointment (in addition to the supervising solicitor). Appointments may be face to face, in Bangor, or online, via Microsoft Teams.

Our clinic is fully insured through the University’s insurers, and we are regulated by the Solicitors regulation Authority.

BULAC will only provide clients with a letter of advice and cannot offer representation at court, draft legal documents or liaise with third parties. The aim of service is to empower clients so that they feel able to deal with matters themselves. If BULAC cannot assist, then we may be able to refer clients on to other organisations who may be able to take the matter further.

For Students

BULAC is excited to invite students to embark upon a dynamic and immersive legal learning experience with our unique opportunity for students to engage in ‘real’ cases addressing various areas of unmet legal need.  BULAC allows students to delve into clients’ real problems providing a comprehensive understanding of diverse legal challenges.

BULAC is offered as a two-part module in the final year of the law degree. There are two 20 credit modules allowing students to bridge the gap between theory and practice, applying their theoretical knowledge of substantive law, legal procedure and related skills in a practical setting.

Students will provide free legal advice to members of the public on areas such as housing, family law, employment and consumer under the supervision of qualified solicitors. This will allow students to enhance their skills for professional practice including skills such as client interviewing, matter analysis, practical legal research, legal drafting and marketing. Students will also be trained on a bespoke case management system which mirrors systems used in private practice. This module will hone these skills thus contributing to employability, particularly in the legal services industry.

Students will learn through a series of training activities and then will be interviewing and advising real clients with various legal issues under the supervision of qualified solicitors in a nurturing and supportive environment. Students will work in pairs to interview and advise clients.
