The Bangor Graduate Attributes represent a holistic set of capabilities that go beyond your subject knowledge and expertise.  They encapsulate broader skills and qualities that enable graduates to thrive in diverse personal, professional, and societal contexts.

Events during My Graduate Career Week will give you excellent opportunities to develop these strengths, as well as discuss the Bangor Graduate Attributes with exhibitors and guest speakers.

Examples include:

  • Application – why not apply your digital networking skills to set up a LinkedIn profile so that you can connect with professionals you meet during the Careers Fair and follow up with questions later.
  • Challenge – visiting exhibition stands, asking questions in a careers talk may push you slightly out of your comfort zone but will help you to develop the confidence to speak to new people.
  • Self-direction – use the opportunities during My Graduate Career Week to explore new and existing career ideas and establish some career goals for you to aim to achieve during the year.
  • Inquiry – it’s important to be proactive in your job search, so make notes during the Fair and schedule time to follow up and research any new companies, opportunities or terminology you’ve learned about!
  • Collaboration – why not team up with friends to plan who and what you’d like to see at the events, and meet up later to debrief and reflect on your key takeaways from the day.

Advice on Making the Most of My Graduate Career Week

  • Update your CV to reflect your experience and transferable skills so that you can easily and confidently share this with employers attending the fair. For support, come along to one of our workshops or have a look at the CV writing resources. Be sure to use CareerSet to get exclusive access to instant feedback on your CV, powered by AI software used by recruiters.
  • Setting up a LinkedIn profile is a great way of managing your online presence and making it easy to network with employers you’ll meet during the week. LinkedIn is a professional platform and makes it easy to keep in touch with your new connections. If you’re unsure where to start with setting up a profile, head to this short online workshop to find out more.
  • Networking might feel like new territory for some students, but with a little bit of preparation, you’ll be able to present yourself really effectively and professionally. For tips and strategies on how to network effectively, head to this short online workshop.
  • Take a detailed look at the employers, organisations and guest speakers who’ll be attending My Graduate Career Week. Look at their websites and social media pages and check what information about their graduate recruitment you can read about in advance. Showing an employer that you’ve taken the initiative to research them will put you one step ahead and make a very professional first impression!
  • Log in to CareerConnect – most of the employers and exhibitors attending My Graduate Career Week will be advertising their graduate opportunities on there at some point throughout the year.
  • If you’d like a one to one chat to discuss your career development, your CV or any other matter related to your career development, book an appointment to speak to an Employability Adviser.
  • For any other topics relating to careers and employability, browse the range of resources available on Employability Hub.

Advice for 1st and 2nd Year Students

  • Keep an open mind and explore new career ideas, you may find relevant opportunities with unexpected companies!
  • Remember that many graduate opportunities will recruit from any academic discipline, so don’t stick to subject-specific talks and exhibitors only.
  • Ask about work experience, internships and work shadowing opportunities. Now is the time to plan for next summer.

Advice for Final year and Postgraduate Students

  • The advice for 1st and 2nd years (above) still applies to you, but you may want to be more detailed in your interactions with exhibitors and speakers.
  • Ask about deadlines for graduate opportunities – many of these deadlines will come up before Christmas, so make sure you don’t miss out!
  • Ask for an email address or LinkedIn profile to follow up with – follow up promptly after the fair to make the best impression.
  • Find out about recruitment processes and what advice would people share based on their experience of recruiting graduates – anecdotal advice can be much more insightful than generalised online advice.
  • If you are a postgraduate student, how about discussing research opportunities, or explaining the impact of your research with relevant employers?
