Bangor Celebrates Chinese New Year 2023
On Saturday, 21st January, the Confucius Institute at Bangor University celebrated the Chinese Lunar New Year of the Rabbit in Pontio with a Chinese New Year Gala, live musical and tai chi performances, and traditional Chinese arts and craft workshops.
We were happy to welcome a professional team of Chinese artists from the Goldsmiths Confucius Institute in London who mesmerised over 300 audiences with a spectacular repertoire of Chinese music and dance.
'Dancers leapt six feet off the stage with such elegance and landed without the slighted sound. Magnificent!’ Anthony Brooks
Drop-in Chinese calligraphy and knots workshops brought many families who enjoyed practising exciting traditional arts and crafts.
Special guests on the day included the Mayor of Bangor, Councillor Gwynant Roberts, Prof Andrew Edwards, PVC, and Prof Ruth McElroy, Head of the school of Arts, Culture and Language.
Councillor Gwynant Roberts commented:
'I was honoured to be invited to the celebration of the Chinese Year of Rabbit with the Confucius Institute in a gala at Pontio. The presentation of dance and songs exhibiting Chinese traditional culture. A truly engrossing experience and an honour to witness. The Confucius Institute is an example, not fully appreciated, of making Bangor a location of international renown. Congratulations!'
Well done to all the artists for their outstanding performances!
Happy New Year! 新年快乐!
