Bangor University has ranked in the top 11% worldwide for sustainability in QS Sustainability Rankings 2025.
The University has maintained its position in the top 200, ranking 196th out of 1,751 institutions. Bangor is ranked 37 out of 99 institutions in the UK.
QS launched the Sustainability Rankings in 2022 and also publishes the globally influential QS World University Rankings.
The inclusion of sustainability in the QS ranking aligns with the main theme of the University’s strategic plan - Strategy 2030: a sustainable world for future generations – and reflects the changing priorities of students and society at large over recent years.
These rankings are focused around three key areas, which are Environmental Impact, Social Impact, and Governance.
The Environmental Impact category performed well, remaining in the top 150 (138th). Overall performance in this area was driven by reaching the top 100 in the Environmental Education (67th) and the Environmental Research (78th) indicators. These categories also performed well in the UK, with Environmental Education ranked 16th, and Environmental Research ranked 21st (out of 98 UK institutions).
The Social Impact category was comfortably placed in the top 400 (355th) with a particularly strong performance in the Health & Wellbeing indicator. Here, the University ranked 46th globally, and also ranked highly in the UK, coming 24th out of 98. Our performance in Impact of Education saw a leap of 183 places, reaching 412th. Also in this category, we achieved a top 300 position for the Equality indicator, top 500 for Knowledge Exchange.
In the final category, Governance, which is based on a single indicator, Bangor remained in the top 200 (169th).
Since 2023, the number of institutions participating has increased substantially, from 1,403 to 1,751.
Professor Oliver Turnbull, Deputy-Vice-Chancellor of Global Engagement said, “We can be incredibly proud of our achievements in sustainability. The QS Sustainability World University Rankings highlights that Bangor is a world-leading institution in this area. It is clear that we are performing strongly across a whole host of key indicators, from Environmental Impact to Health & Wellbeing.”
