Last year in 2024 Bangor University celebrated its 140th anniversary since it was established in 1884. As part of the 140 years celebrations, it was decided to have an exhibition on the art collection. Due to Storiel’s programme of exhibitions and capital works project supported by CELF ( Welsh Government) to establish a contemporary art network for Wales it was decided on this early slot in 2025.
Bangor University is the custodian of a number of important museum collections formed since the University was established. The collections are diverse in nature and include fine art. This exhibition celebrates the anniversary of the University and its art by displaying highlights from the collection.
It contains elements of historic connections to the University by displaying portraits of some of its former students, staff and buildings, but it also exhibits some of the best artworks that the University has in its collection.
The art collection consists of approximately 650 works, dating from the 17th to the 21st centuries. The collection has developed mainly through bequests, donations and purchases, acquired mainly because either the artist or the subject relates to north Wales or is relevant to the University.
The collection creates an important artistic and cultural asset for the University and for the whole of north Wales. Although some of the artworks are displayed in public spaces around the University, it is rare to be able to see and appreciate them in an art gallery setting. This is an unique opportunity for the community to be able to enjoy and be inspired by paintings that are part of an excellent public collection.
The official opening will take place 01/02/2025 at 12.00pm.
