'Best Welsh-language playwright' a research student at the School of Welsh

On the night of Saturday, 30 January, a number of theatre companies, directors, actors, dancers and playwrights came together at Sherman Cymru in Cardiff for the 2015 Wales Theatre Awards ceremony - a ceremony which celebrates excellence in the fields of theatre, opera and dance.

There were 600 individual nominations across a wide range of categories, including 'Best female performance in the Welsh language', 'Best male performance in the Welsh language', 'Best production in the Welsh language' and 'Best playwright in the Welsh language'.

It is a source of pride for the School of Welsh, Bangor University that one of the School's research students, Llŷr Titus, 23, from Brynmawr near Sarn Meyllteyrn, was awarded the 'Best Welsh-language playwright'. Llŷr received the award for his play Drych which he composed as part of Cwmni'r Frân Wen's 'Sgript i Lwyfan' scripting course, and was staged nationally last year. This is not the first time that Llŷr's work has received national recognition as he won the National Urdd Eisteddfod's Crown in 2011 and Drama Medal in 2012.

Llŷr said: "It's been a good experience getting to write a play and take it on tour, and receiving any kind of recognition for that then makes it so much better. I'm very glad that I won - it's been an incredible experience. I'm in a very good environment here, at the School of Welsh, if I want to do this kind of thing. Everyone, lecturers and fellow students, are very supportive."
