Calling the future research leaders and innovators of Wales - Welsh Crucible 2012
The Welsh Crucible is a prestigious professional and leadership development programme for the future research leaders of Wales.
What is Welsh Crucible?
Funded by the St David’s Day group of higher education institutions, Welsh Crucible will bring together thirty researchers to explore how they can work together to tackle the current research challenges facing Wales.
Welsh Crucible 2012 will take place over three intensive two-day (residential) workshops comprising inspiring guest speakers, seminars, skills sessions and informal discussions.
Welsh Crucible will help you to
- develop a network of peers within the research community,
- forge links with the National Assembly for Wales, and the Welsh media;
- improve your effectiveness both within and beyond your organisation;
- ensure that your research has greater impact;
- learn about different areas of research and encourage personal and career development.
Welsh Crucible - 2012 Programme
- 31st May and 1st June, hosted by Cardiff and Glamorgan Universities in Cardiff
- 28th and 29th June, hosted by Swansea University in Swansea
- 26th and 27th July, hosted by Aberystwyth and Bangor Universities in Bangor
Participants must commit to attending all three workshops as a condition of applying.
Who should apply?
Applications are invited from highly promising researchers from all disciplines
- with three years’ postdoctoral research experience (or equivalent); (e.g. lecturers, academic fellows, research fellows, senior research fellows)
- working in Welsh SMEs/spin-outs or in Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff, Glamorgan or Swansea Universities
Only 30 applicants across Wales will be selected to take part in the 2012 Welsh Crucible. Applications will be reviewed by a specially convened Selection Panel.
Summary of Award
Funding from the St David’s Day institutions means that successful applicants may participate on this programme free of charge.
All residential costs, including accommodation and catering, and costs for all sessions in the three Crucible Labs, will be provided for successful Crucible candidates. Travel expenses to cover reasonable travel costs to and from each Crucible Lab will be paid.

Selection Process Criteria
Early /mid career– minimum of 3 years’ postdoctoral experience or equivalent (required)
Excellence in research and creative thinking in how they approach their career
Desire to:
- Develop greater impact from your research
- Interest in pubic engagement, interacting with media and policy makers
- Develop a network of peers in research
- Interdisciplinary working
Understanding and commitment to Welsh Crucible mission:
- Interested in, ideally experienced in, interdisciplinary collaboration
- Public engagement and knowledge transfer
- Developing skills and attitudes for innovative research
- Creative thinking in their career approach
- Interests in other work-focused activities outside research, e.g. public engagement, involvement in learned societies or subject groups.
