Exhibition and discussion “Bilingual Communities of the World”
Local people will have an opportunity to learn more about other bilingual communities in the world at an exhibition and discussion which takes place on Wednesday, 2 November 2011 at Studio 1, Galeri, Caernarfon. The event “Bilingual Communities of the World” is being organised by the ESRC Centre for Research on Bilingualism Theory & Practice, Bangor University, as part of ESRC’s Festival of Social Science. All welcome and admission free.
The exhibition will include first hand reports by speakers of minority languages from around the world concerning linguistic rights, language use in private and public life, and any community campaigns.
The evening will see a panel discussion, chaired by Bethan Jones Parry, with speakers of Basque, Tibetan, Lombard, Galician and Ndebele, in which the audience can ask the panel questions. The discussion will be an opportunity for all to share ideas on how to make the best of our small languages. There will also be a talk by Prof. Margaret Deuchar, Dr Peredur Davies and Marika Fusser on the results of research conducted by the Bilingualism Centre, as well as a quiz on small languages.
Programme of the day:
- 4-7pm: exhibition
- 6-7pm: buffet
- 7-8.30pm: talk and panel discussion
The exhibition will be open to everyone to come and view, but there are limited places for the buffet and discussion. Anyone interested in attending should register by contacting the Centre by 17 October by calling 01248 382559 or e-mailing l.m.thomas@bangor.ac.uk.
