Librarian at National Library of Wales presents A H Dodd Memorial Lecture
Professor Aled Jones, the Chief Executive and Librarian of the National Library of Wales visits Bangor University on Wednesday, 22 October 2014, at 6.00pm.
Professor Jones will discuss “Wales & the politics of Christian Mission in Colonial Bengal, 1890-1947” for the annual A H Dodd Memorial Lecture, which takes place in the University’s Main Arts Lecture Theatre. The Lecture is free to attend and open to all.
The Welsh Calvinistic Methodist mission to Assam and north eastern Bengal did more than evangelise, it altered the balance of power across a swathe of colonial India. This year’s Dodd lecture explores the effects of that mission on India and Wales during a period in which both were defining new forms of national identity.
As Aled Gruffydd Jones will argue: ‘the Welsh who participated in the mission, whether by dropping pennies into the collection box in their chapels in Wales or by preaching or dispensing medical care on the streets of Bengal, were conscious agents in a process of revolutionary change’.
Aled Jones previously held the Sir John Williams Chair of Welsh History and was Senior Pro Vice-Chancellor at Aberystwyth University.
