Llew Rees Memorial Prize 2021
Bangor University has awarded its annual award for sporting achievement, the Llew Rees Memorial Prize, to talented Rugby Union player, Brea Leung.
The Llewelyn Rees Memorial Award of £750 commemorates the University’s Director of Physical Recreation between 1961-72. It is awarded to the student who has made the greatest contribution to raising the profile of Bangor University sport by their achievement at a national or international level.
Brea, a second year Radiography student from Caernarfon, joined the Bangor University Women’s Rugby Union team in her first year, and has represented the University in several British Universities and Colleges Sport games in 2019/20, with the team reaching the cup final for the first time in its history.
Growing up with a rugby-loving family, Brea was selected for the North Wales girls’ team at the age of 11. At senior level, she has represented RGC, Scarlets, Wales as well as English Premiership clubs Firwood Waterloo and is currently playing at elite level with Premier 15s team, the Sale Sharks.
Upon receiving the annual prize, Brea said: “I feel honoured to have been awarded the Llew Rees Memorial Prize. This year I've felt extremely privileged, I was granted elite athlete status which allowed me to continue to train and compete throughout the pandemic. Receiving this prize will really aid me in continuing to play top tier rugby for Sale Sharks this season alongside finishing my degree at Bangor and becoming a qualified Radiographer.”
Iona Williams, Bangor University Sports Development Manager, said: “Despite the pandemic and government restrictions, Brea has worked hard to train when possible. We are honoured to present her with the 2021 Llew Rees Memorial Prize.”
