Nine new lecturers extend study through Welsh at Bangor University

The talented and successful young composer, Owain Llwyd, whose compositions have been heard on Top Gear and other popular television programmes and films, is among nine new lecturers appointed to Bangor University. The nine will be delivering new modules, available in Welsh for the first time this academic year.

Eight new lecturers have already been appointed, with one appointment remaining to be made in Social Work.

The appointments are a result of the University’s recent success in winning funding from Y Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol for the nine full time lectureship posts and six Welsh medium PhD Scholarships as well as other projects.

The lectureships and scholarships reflect Bangor University’s commitment to Welsh medium higher education. Bangor University is the leading provider of Welsh medium education in Wales.

The new lecturers take up their five year appointments from September 2011. The subjects taught include the environment, psychology, nursing, social sciences, French, Popular music, composition for film and television, chemistry and social work.

Professor John G. Hughes, Vice -Chancellor of Bangor University said:

“These appointments are a definite mark of our commitment as an institution to the development of Welsh medium higher education. The particular support of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol is to be warmly welcomed.”

Dr Owain Llwyd, specialises in composing music for film- and will be sharing his expertise as a module choice for Music students at the University from now on. Following the release of a series of CDs of library music by Boosey and Hawkes, his compositions can be heard on programmes such as the X-Factor (in Britain and Europe), Top Gear and several television commercials. Owain comes to the University following a period working as a composer for films in London. Prior to this he was Research Scholar under the Canolfan Addysg Uwch Cyfrwng Cymraeg (Centre for Welsh Medium Higher Education), which is now part of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol.

Joining Owain are Dr Paula Roberts lecturing in Environmental Sciences, Dr Manon Jones in Psychology, Dr Ruth Williams lecture Nursing, Dr Manon Mathias lecturing in French, Dr Craig Owen Jones lecturing in Popular Music, Enlli Haf Huws lecturing in Chemistry and Dr Myfanwy Davies lecturing in Social Policy
