P-p-p-p-pick up a postgraduate qualification!
Want to find out more about postgraduate study? Then keep and eye for the postgraduate penguins over the next few days as they will be around Bangor handing out information about the University’s Postgraduate Courses fair that will be held in PJ Hall on Friday.
A postgraduate qualification can not only enhance your CV and open doors to new career opportunities but also help you to move forward or change direction in your current career.
A postgraduate qualification from Bangor University was key to Mandy Knott clinching an exciting and vital job- and her first in a new career.
Mandy now has the important task of working on a legislative measure which will ensure the management and conservation of the cockle and mussel fishery in Morecambe Bay.
She attended a University Postgraduate Courses Fair, which gave her an opportunity to discuss the course she wanted to study at length, to get to know the course director and visit the facilities.
Mandy said: “The Fair provided an opportunity to meet the staff and discuss my options face-to-face and to get a feel for the place. It confirmed my decision to apply.”
Another example is Pam Martin, who gained her postgraduate qualification from Bangor University in January 2010. Pam came to Bangor University as a mature student having followed an access course. After graduating in Psychology she worked at the School of Psychology as a research assistant for a number of years and had not necessarily considered following a higher degree.
She said: “The opportunity arose to follow a combined MSc and PhD course and I saw it as a chance to learn more about subjects that interested me and also as a further four years of work.”
She is currently employed as a Research Officer and Trials Coordinator at the University. Her day to day duties include visiting people across north Wales who have recently been given a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s Disease and recruiting them to take part in research trials. Pam, originally from Anglesey, would not have had the opportunity to do this job without her PhD qualification.
Pam Martin says of her job that: “It doesn’t feel like working- that’s how much I enjoy it”
For more advice, why not have a look at what James Intriligator, a senior lecturer here at Bangor University, had to say in the Guardian article “Will a Master’s get you a job?” today.
Bangor University’s next Postgraduate Courses Fair will be held on Friday 18 February 2011 between 12.30 – 2.30pm.
The event will be held in the University’s Prichard Jones Hall, with representation from each of our Academic Schools, the Postgraduate Admissions Office and Student Support Services.
In addition, some academic Schools will be holding individual tours and subject talks following the event.
Anybody interested in postgraduate study at Bangor is most welcome to attend, and take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about the many different postgraduate programmes that are currently available. Pre-register for the event online via the University’s website.
