Pupils get taste of Uni Life
Almost 50 pupils from schools and colleges throughout North Wales got to experience university life for themselves at Bangor University recently.
The Year 12 students spent three days getting an intensive taste of higher education at a Summer School aimed at giving young people a deeper understanding of what university has to offer. With those attending including some with no family experience of higher education. The wide-ranging programme included subject-based mini-lectures and sessions on practical topics such as career development, student finance and support services. The event – organised by Bangor’s Marketing department – also gave the pupils plenty of opportunity to meet current students, with a team of Student Ambassadors accompanying them to all activities and on hand to answer their questions about university life.
The academic seminars covered subjects ranging from History, Law and Healthcare Sciences (Nursing & Midwifery) to Psychology, Ocean Sciences and Modern Languages. The group, who stayed in flats on the University’s Ffriddoedd student village, also took part in teambuilding sessions and social activities such as paintballing and go karting.
“It was a great opportunity for Year 12 pupils throughout North Wales to find out more about the whole university experience – from attending academic lectures and seminars to staying in halls of residences and meeting new people,” said Amanda Smith Education Liaison and Events Manager.
“The feedback we got from those who attended was fantastic- with all of them wishing they could stay on for more than three days! It was a real bonding experience with those attending having made new friends at different schools – and many of them are also considering applying for courses at Bangor University next year.”
