REF 2014: Outstanding quality of health research in Bangor University

The Heads of both Healthcare Sciences and Medical Sciences have welcomed the REF 2014 results, in which 95% of health research at Bangor University was recognised as world-leading and internationally excellent. 

Professor Jo Rycroft-Malone said “The quality of our health research outputs put us in the top 3 out of 94 Universities, and our score for overall Research quality (GPA) was the highest in the University. Our research covered important global health challenges around the organisation and delivery of healthcare across the life span, and from the bench to the bedside. This achievement demonstrates our commitment to research with impact for patients and health services.”

Professor Jo Rycroft-Malone, Head of School for Healthcare Sciences, said she was delighted with the result, which she described as ‘a significant and important achievement’.

“This result reflects the expertise and commitment of our staff, and reinforces our ambition to remain a leading force in health research. We are committed to continuing to with our partners to find new ways to do and get research into practice so that patients and services benefit.

“This is an important result for our students as they will continue to benefit from studying in a research led environment, as well as at a university which is ranked top in Wales and 7th in the UK for student satisfaction. Our submission has resulted in an overall ranking in the top 20 out of 94 universities in the UK. We can all celebrate these results - they are testament to our existing excellence and future potential.”

Mr Dean Williams, Head of the School of Medical Sciences, welcomed the results, which included valuable input from researchers at the North Wales Cancer Group, which will soon be part of the School of Medical Sciences. He said “These results are a clear recognition of the excellent research activity undertaken in North Wales, with Bangor University being at the forefront. It also highlights the importance of working across different academic disciplines.”
