Sir Roger Casement-The Last Hero
On Good Friday 1916 Roger Casement landed in Ireland from a German submarine and was immediately arrested. He was charged with treason and was hanged in August 1916.
A Public Lecture at Bangor University at 6.30 on Wednesday, October 19 will discuss the trial of the man who was convicted of treason-and the link with Bangor University. One of those who defended Casement at the Old Bailey was Thomas Artemus Jones, who later became a prominent judge. His papers, including his notes on the Casement case are deposited at the University Archive.
The renowned historian and Honorary Fellow in History at Edinburgh University, Professor Owen Dudley Edwards will lecture on 'Rex versus Sir Roger Casement - The Last Hero' in the Main Arts Lecture Theatre, and the lecture is open for everyone. This is the first lecture under the auspices of the Archives.
