Sweet William- A portrait of Shakespeare and his art
Sweet William- A portrait of Shakespeare and his art
with Michael Pennington
A world-class actor… a world class playwright.
In his brilliant one man show Michael Pennington combines his performance skills with textual scholarship and practical knowledge to give us well rounded a portrait of Shakespeare and his art as you could hope for in two hours…Whether as the boy Mamillius in The Winter’s Tale, Mistress Quickly or the senile Shallow and Silence in Henry IV, he embraces the infinite variety found in Shakespeare’s world.
‘He is steeped in Shakespearian knowledge, and he shares it with you with the modest generosity of a drinking partner…you are mesmerised.. This show is a gem. If I weren’t a Shakespeare junkie, Pennington would have turned me into one.’’
John Peter. The Sunday Times
Michael Pennington’s career has spanned 40 years, during which he has played a variety of leading roles for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal National Theatre and for the English Shakespeare Company, which he co-founded with Michael Bogdanov in 1986 and which toured the world three times.
He has also appeared memorably in the West End, in television and on film. He has played most of Shakespeare’s leading roles, directed internationally, and had highly successful books published on Hamlet, Twelfth Night and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In 2004 he gave the British Academy’s annual Shakespeare Lecture, the first actor to do so since 2004.
