Worth her weight in silver and bronze! Catrin brings in medal haul at European Weightlifting Championships
A local athlete awarded a sports bursary by Bangor University has returned from the European Youth Weightlifting Championships in Poland with a silver medal in the Snatch Lift and an overall bronze medal for her efforts in the 48k category.
Catrin Jones, a pupil at Ysgol Friars, Bangor, is Canolfan Brailsford’s Local Bursary recipient for 2016/17. The bursary allows a local athlete such as Catrin to use the facilities at Canolfan Brailsford, the University’s sports and fitness centre, as part of their training programme.
Facing stiff competition from established weightlifting nations such as Turkey, Azerbaijan and Bulgaria, Catrin put in an impressive performance in the Polish town of Nowy Tomyśyl during 9 – 17 September, claiming silver in the Snatch Lift. Coupled with an equally as impressive display in the ‘Clean & Jerk’ discipline, Catrin made it onto the podium to claim a Bronze medal in the Women’s 48kg category.
Catrin is no stranger to the podium. In September last year she won gold at the Commonwealth Youth Championships in Samoa and is currently the Welsh senior champion, Great Britain Senior and Youth Champion, the GB U18 and U20 champion and record holder. Catrin’s next competition is at the World Youth Championships in Malaysia and is aiming to compete at the Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast in 2018.
