Young weightlifter brings home the trophies
A local girl who has recently taken up weight-lifting has been having success at national level, having scarcely been weightlifting for a year.
Catrin Jones has recently won the Welsh Schools Weightlifting Championships in the year 10, under 44kg class in Haverfordwest, followed by the British Schools & Youths Weightlifting Championships 2014 in which she lifted in the year 10, in the under 40kg class. Not only did Catrin win this, she also broke the Welsh record for this class by 38kg in the process, with an overall total lifted of 90kg.
Catrin, from Upper Bangor, and a pupil at Ysgol Friars School has been training for about a year at Bangor University Sports Centre, where she is coached by her father Dave Jones, who is the Fitness Manager at the Centre.
Dave says "Catrin has made excellent progress over the 12 months and will hopefully continue to maintain and improve this progress."
Catrin got into the sport as she'd trained with her father for her current sport of gymnastics father and found she enjoyed the sport and decided to lift weights as well.
Asked what it is like training with Dad, Catrin says: “It’s great as we can discuss training routines and can be quite flexible in our training.”
Catrin and Dave would like to thank Ray Williams from Holyhead who has helped along the way with Catrin’s training.
