Applied Design Centre

At the Centre we train both design and technology teachers and product designers on our BSc Product Design course, MSc Applied Innovation Design and PGCE Design and Technology degree course (leading to Qualified Teacher Status).

We also run workshops, short courses and competitions for schools, teachers and pupils.

Our philosophy is to teach our students to be creative and innovative within 'real' situations. We encourage our trainees to work on projects which have commercial potential. The experience and knowledge they gain in this context encompasses issues such as Research, Marketing, Intellectual Property, Sustainability and Economics, for example.

This approach has seen the Centre and its students gain considerable respect nationally. Student projects undertaken at the centre have covered a range of product design challenges and the products they have designed and developed have been exhibited UK wide and are the subject of much media coverage (the BBC's Best Inventions, for example). A successful track record of innovation, technology and product design education at the centre has enabled us to expand the range of courses we offer.
