Two professors from Bangor University have been named among the 10 most influential environmental professionals in the UK.
The prestigious ENDS Report has unveiled its latest Power List of the 100 UK environmental professionals who have made the greatest impact in the past two years.
Founded in 1978, The ENDS Report is a magazine covering environmental policy and business and news.
Professor Christian Dunn, from the School of Environmental and Natural Sciences at Bangor University, has been named as one of the most influential environmental professionals on the list for his work on wetland science.
“I’m genuinely surprised to find myself on this list, alongside some serious heavy hitters and even household names like Feargal Sharkey,” Professor Dunn said.
“I’m just rather obsessed with wetlands and how we can use them as Nature-based Solutions to tackle the most pressing issues we face: climate change, the biodiversity crisis and water pollution.”
“I’m just lucky I get to work at Bangor University where I can research these fantastic habitats, work with external companies and organisations, and teach a brilliant bunch of students,” Professor Dunn added.
Professor Christian Dunn is a wetland scientist at Bangor University in North Wales, UK. He is also the Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor for Sustainability. His research areas and expertise cover all aspects of freshwater and coastal wetland science, plastic pollution, water quality and treatment, and general ecological environmental issues. He is the Associate Director of the Bangor Wetlands Group.
Also named is Professor Bridget Emmett OBE, an ecosystem scientist at the UK Centre of Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) who is also an Honorary Professor of Bangor University
Professor Emmett has led more than 20 multi-partner projects that tackle urgent challenges such as the need for cleaner air, more sustainable land management practices, restoring soil health, climate mitigation as well as developing new opportunities for policy and business such as green finance and net zero.
She is Principal Investigator of the Environment and Rural Affairs Monitoring and Modelling Programme (ERAMMP). It is collecting vast amounts of data across the Welsh landscape, to identify long-term environmental trends, model change and future impact of land use and management, in order to support the Welsh Government in developing the Sustainable Land Management policy.
Professor Emmett is also president of the British Ecological Society.
The ENDS Report’s flagship Power List, now in its third year, celebrates the profession’s most impactful individuals, featuring successful nominees from government departments and regulators, NGOs, environmental consultancies and law firms, academia, and more.
ENDS Report editor Jamie Carpenter said, "The Power List is a celebration of the vast reserves of talent that exist in the environmental profession, and aims to shine a light on work of those whose efforts are delivering positive change.
“The individuals on this year’s Power List were selected following a rigorous process including a survey of ENDS Report’s readership, and the help of a panel of experts in the field.”
