Established in 2006 with support from the Welsh Government and the Wolfson Foundation, the BIU houses a research and teaching dedicated 3 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging scanner, supported by several full-time staff and faculty within the School of Human and Behavioural Science, Bangor University.
Research groups bring together psychologists, neuroscientists, physiologists, physicists and clinicians to study the complex organisation of human brain function in action and perception, social cognition, language and semantics, as well as the neurochemical and physiological processes underlying brain function and plasticity.
The BIU enables basic and applied research, facilitates the training of new neuroimaging researchers and enables basic science and clinical collaborations across Wales, the UK and the globe.
Over the last 10 years, work at the BIU has attracted funding from the Wellcome Trust, ERC, Leverhulme, UKRI, Ministry of Defence and various commercial funders amongst others.
