Sustainability in Construction
We are going through an exciting period of redevelopment and consolidation of the University’s estate. This is providing us with unprecedented opportunities to place sustainability at the very heart of our design aspirations.
The flagship Environment Centre Wales a partnership venture between ourselves and the Natural Environment Research Council’s Centre for Ecology, has put our marker in the sand. Designed from the outset to achieve the Building Research Establishment’s “Excellent” rating, the building boasts a myriad of energy efficiency measures, natural light and renewable energy technologies and all of our future new build will also be designed to the same exacting standards as the Environment Centre.
Even in the refurbishment of our existing building stock, we will seek to identify and implement cost effective environmental features, for example greywater recycling, and renewable energy facilities.
For the built environment and in line with the University Estate Strategy, we emphasise our commitment to net zero and deliver practical ways of achieving this through the implementation of a three stage Reduce-Produce-Living Lab approach and by adopting Fabric-First, Bio-First and Zero-Carbon approaches to all new builds and major refurbishments from 2022 onwards. As a minimum the University will design all new builds to BREEAM Excellent Standards.
Waste in construction
Any construction waste generated by a contractor is the responsibility of that contractor and is written into the procurement documentation. All contractors working for Bangor University agree to dispose of any waste they generate according to the waste hierarchy.
