Thank you for applying to our programme. Our selection process takes place over a number of stages. This includes Stage 1 – Online Numeracy and Literacy test and Stage 2 – Online Group Interviews.
Stage 1 – Online Numeracy and Literacy Test
If you have been successfully shortlisted, you will be invited to undertake the Numeracy and Literacy test that will conducted online and under examination conditions. Applicants will be sent a Zoom link (see example below) to join the online meeting in the invitation, and then will be provided a link to the Microsoft Forms platform on the day, where you will find the Numeracy and Literacy tests. You have 90 minutes to complete both the numeracy and literacy elements of the test. If you are unable to attend on the date allocated, please let us know through UCAS as soon as you can, and we will rearrange another date if available.
At the start of your numeracy and literacy test you will need to present your proof of identity to the interviewer which can be an original copy of a passport or driving licence.
The numeracy element is presented at GCSE/Level 2 and there is no calculator permitted for this test, whilst in the written work we ask you to respond to a midwifery related scenario. Scenarios have been developed with the support of our Maternity Voices members.

Stage 2 – Online Group Interview Sessions
If you are successful in the Numeracy and Literacy test you will be invited to take part in one of the selection days for the group interviews. The interview day will start at 9:30 am and will end by approximately 2:30 pm. If you are unable to attend on the date allocated please let us know through UCAS as soon as you can and we will rearrange, if another date is available.
The selection day will start with a group talk presenting an overview of the course and introductions to all panel members. Panel members will include the Teaching Team, Health Board midwifery staff and current midwifery students. The talk will also cover our selection processes and how you will receive your offer if you are successful at interview. We will also provide information about our expectations of you, your placements which make up 50% of the course, DBS requirements and occupational health requirements. We then move on to group work overseen by panel members.
For your first group work interview session, you will be provided with a scenario that you must read through and discuss with other members of the group. You will be required to make decisions with regards to aspects of the scenario and discuss the rationale for your choices within a set amount of time. You will then present your choices and the rationale for the consensus decisions that have been reached. Your interviewer/s may ask you some values-based questions which will explore any issues from your discussions and the qualities and values necessary for midwifery practice. The discussions are designed to explore your qualities, values and ability to demonstrate some understanding of intelligent kindness.
Following a break, you will be required to access the second group session where you are asked to consider and provide an individual account of a midwifery topic that has been randomly selected. The topics are accessible and well-known subjects related to midwifery and childbirth. Topics and questions have been reviewed by our Maternity Voices members.
At the end of the interview, you will have the opportunity to ask lecturers, Health Board staff and/or students any questions you may have.
