Creating an effective CV is an essential step in your job search. It’s important that your CV is clear and easy to read, no more than 1-2 pages in length and relevant to the job you’re applying for. We have lots of support available to help you get started.
As a student or graduate of Bangor University you have exclusive access to CareerSet, software which provides instant feedback on your CV and suggestions for improvements. We recommend students use this as their first step to get their CVs up to a good standard. We also run practical CV workshops in computer labs on campus during the academic year, and can offer Guidance Appointments for final CV reviews.
You should always send a covering letter with your CV. Make sure you know what the essential and desirable criteria are for the job you’re applying for, as you need to give examples that you meet these criteria in your covering letter. You should also demonstrate your enthusiasm for the employer or the job you’re applying for – tell them why you’re interested in the role, or what attracts you to the organisation.
We have lots of help available to support you with applications through our Employability Hub
Whether you are looking for local part-time work to fit around your studies, or a vacation job during the summer, our Employability Hub has plenty of tips to help you get started – take a look at our ‘Tips for finding part-time work’ handout. We also run regular workshops on how to effectively job search, so check out our workshop schedule too.

It’s important to prepare thoroughly for all parts of the application process, from sending off an application form or CV to interviews or assessment centres. Although lots of students worry about how to perform well during an interview, there are a few simple steps you can follow which will give you the confidence to succeed.
Did you know, for example, that you can often predict the type of questions an employer might ask you during your interview? They’re often based on the essential and desirable criteria listed in the original advert.
All of our students and graduates have access to our exclusive Graduates First platform, where you can practise a wide range of interview questions and review and receive feedback on your performance. The interactive interview practice tool is particularly useful for pre-recorded and online interviews.
The Careers & Employability Service also offers a package of support to students who face barriers to work experience. Barriers may be due to a variety of factors such as: financial hardship, disability, a learning difference, mental health, and caring responsibilities.
If you would like to find out more about the support we offer for work experience, just complete out Expression of interest form and we’ll get in touch with you. You may be eligible for funding to help you access work experience opportunities, for example funding for training courses or travel expenses, provided they are not associated with mandatory or professional placements.
