Overview

Classes will involve a combination of lecture content and group discussion regarding the application of criminological theory to the practical aspects of police work.

Indicative content: -Evidence-Based Policing: Examining the role of evidence based policing -Evidence-Based Policing: Systematically reviewing and critically evaluating evidence -Research Methods and Skills -Response Policing: Theories on human behaviour in the context of response -Decision-making and discretion: Effectiveness -Reviewing the learning from the attachment experiences

Attachments DHEP students will undertake a period of professional attachment to each of the key areas, these being: Criminal Investigation Department, Intelligence, Roads Policing, and Community Policing.

Learning Outcomes

• Critically assess risk factors associated with victimisation and their impact on strategies for tackling victimisation, as well as exploring strategies for dealing with offenders and repeat offending - Learning outcome 2

• Critically evaluate crime prevention theories and strategies and assess the impact of options available to reduce re-offending - Learning outcome 1

• Critically evaluate the strategic drivers for professionalising policing and relevant national policing strategies - Learning outcome 4

• Students will attend 8 half day workshops, Development of the OCP and work as a Police Constable are a key part of the module

• Understand coaching and mentoring approaches in professional policing and the role of assessment in professional policing education - Learning outcome 5
