School Of Human And Behavioural Sciences
Module - Semester 1 & 2
20 credits
Module Organiser:
Jonathan Moore
Overview
The module will address the following:
- Exercise fatigue
- The role of hormones, recovery and sleep
- Preparation for endurance sports - heart and circulatory adaptation in endurance athletes, alltitude and hypoxic training, heat
acclimation/acclimtization - The training process - needs analysis, periodization and programming
Assessment Strategy
-threshold -(C) Evidence of basic knowledge and understanding of the principles and application of physiology to sports training and performance, critical analysis of available evidence; and, the ability to identify gaps or controversies in evidence. Most criteria are meet to an adequate standard; there may be a wide range in the quality of different components -good -(B) Evidence of good knowledge and understanding of the principles and application of physiology to sports training and performance, critical analysis of available evidence; and, the ability to identify gaps or controversies in evidence. Most criteria are meet to a good standard; some may be met to a very good standard -excellent -(A) Evidence of deep knowledge and understanding of the principles and application of physiology to sports training and performance; critical analysis of available evidence; and, the ability to identify gaps or controversies in evidence. Some criteria are meet to an exceptionally high standard; the remainder are met to an excellent standard
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of approaches to training used to prepare athletes for competition an apply this to provide an effective briefing.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of exercise fatigue, the role of hormones, recovery and sleep and apply this knowledge and understanding to performance sports
- Demonstrate scholarly ability to identify relevant scientific information, critically analyze existing knowledge, and to identify gaps or controversies
Assessment method
Group Presentation
Assessment type
Summative
Description
You are required to give an oral presentation to a high-performance director from a sport of your choice. Using content delivered by Dr Jonathan Moore and/or Dr Julian Owen as a framework, prepare and deliver a strategy for optimizing an aspect of athletic performance in your chosen sport. The format will involve small groups presenting (20 mins) with a follow up question and answer session (10 min). The focus of the assessment will be the capability to present information logically and coherently at a level that is of most benefit to the performance director.

Assessment method
Blog/Journal/Review
Assessment type
Summative
Description
You are required to write a balanced discussion and evaluation of strengths, weaknesses, and applicability to performance physiology of a topic related to content covered by Dr Blanchfield. A suggested sequence for the ‘critical review’ or ‘critique’ is: Section 1: A brief literature driven synthesis of your chosen topic Section 2: An overview of the current limitations that exist Section 3: Future directions for research in this topic Section 4: Devise an experimental design to test one of these future directions OR discuss the applied implications of this topic for a sport practitioner
