Overview

This module develops and enhances translation skills between English and Italian for native speakers of Italian spending time at BU on Erasmus exchanges, concentrating on contemporary texts. Classes are shared with the translation element of LZI3030.

Assessment Strategy

-threshold -D- - D+: A limited knowledge of vocabulary and grammar and a limited ability to translate and paraphrase the prescribed range of texts. Basic oral/aural competence.

-good -C- - B+: A good knowledge of vocabulary and grammar and a good ability to translate and paraphrase the prescribed range of texts. Good oral/aural competence.

-excellent -A- - A*: An excellent knowledge of vocabulary and grammar and an excellent ability to translate and paraphrase the prescribed range of texts. Excellent oral/aural competence.

Learning Outcomes

• Students will be able to offer accurate and empathetic translations which not only capture the meaning of the text, but also its mood.

• Students will have a greater awareness of the different registers of language and types of discourse.

• Students will have an enlarged vocabulary in relation to the themes studied.

• Students will have engaged in the processes, practices and ideas of translation.
