Overview

This theoretical and practical skills module that builds on the clinical skills learnt in simulation and assesses the clinical development of the dental hygiene student's performance in clinical practice treating patients in clinical placements. Students will learn the theory underpinning clinical practice.

Learning content will include: • Comprehensive treatment planning • Decontamination and the sterilisation for dental instruments • Classification and diagnosis of dental caries and periodontal disease • Aetiology and pathology of dental caries and periodontal diseases • Monitoring periodontal disease • Oral Hygiene education and instruction • Prevention of dental and oral diseases - Evidence Based Toolkit • Effective dental instrumentation in the treatment and management of periodontal disease • Management of dentine sensitivity • Local anaesthesia – anatomy and the effective administration relief using local anaesthesia • The morphology of permanent and deciduous teeth and roots, dental charting to identify teeth and caries • Temporary cementation of crowns • Toothwear • Dental Materials • Overview of crowns, bridges, inlays and prostheses

Students are required to complete a clinical skills portfolio, accompanied by reflections of these activities in clinical placement

All elements of assessment must be passed at the minimum 40% threshold to pass the module.

Learning Outcomes

• Demonstrate an understanding of the aetiology, pathology and progression and management of periodontal disease, toothwear and dental caries.

• Demonstrate competency to undertake the removal of hard and soft deposits from tooth structure and stains using a range of methods following appropriate history taking, examination and treatment planning

• Demonstrate knowledge of the properties of local anaesthesia and associated nerve supply and apply this knowledge in the effective anaesthesia of dental patients.

• Demonstrate understanding of the importance of oral health education and instruction according to the Evidence Based Toolkit, demonstrating effective delivery of patient appropriate advice.

• Describe the morphology of the permanent and deciduous dentition and apply the basic principles of dental diseases and the factors influencing their prevention and management.

• Describe the properties and uses of a range of dental materials employed in dental practice
