Overview

This module introduces you to human anatomy and physiology and delves into the various ways in which the body's systems can break down and manifest in illness and disease. The student will learn to fully appreciate the patient's medical history and how it will affect both the patient's oral health and the student's approach to treatment. This module introduces the students to common and uncommon systemic diseases and the impact on their dental management. Recognition of the common, minor conditions requires a broad knowledge base to be able to recognise and diagnose the more serious, complex and relatively uncommon conditions. This module discusses the legal aspects of dental prescribing and the mode of action, pharmacokinetic properties, therapeutic uses, adverse effects, contraindications and properties of medications that may impinge on dental practice.

Learning content will include: • Anatomy • Body systems with an emphasis on disease processes and the relevant implications on oral health for both the individual and the wider population • Basic pathophysiology of medical conditions • Recognition and diagnosing the more serious, complex and relatively uncommon conditions • Understand the mode of action, pharmacokinetic properties, therapeutic uses, adverse effects, contraindications and properties that may impinge on dental practice and the legal requirements associated with prescribing medication.

• Demonstrate an understanding of a range of systemic diseases, identifying their relevance and outlining their importance to oral and dental health.

• Demonstrate an understanding of common pharmacological therapies used in the management of systemic disease and their impact on dental management

• Demonstrate knowledge of dental and general anatomy and physiology.

• Explain the legal requirements associated with prescribing medication and the role of the Dental Hygienist in pharmacological provision.
