Overview
The MRes Dissertation gives students the opportunity to complete a major piece of research within the area of philosophy, ethics or religion. Students can select any topic within Philosophy and Religion. This module will enhance your research skills and ability to conduct independent research.
There is no defined syllabus, students must select a topic within any aspect of philosophy or religion.
Assessment Strategy
-threshold -40-59% (Pass): Students will be expected to present a well-structured dissertation, with a clear understanding of the subject under discussion, and competent use of primary and secondary sources
-good -60-69% (Merit): Students will be expected to present a sustained and well-structured argument and display a good understanding of the relevant research material. They will be expected to engage critically with secondary literature and offer a clear analysis of the subject under discussion
-excellent -70% + (Distinction): Students will be expected to demonstrate an excellent understanding of the subject, supported by a sound grasp of a broad range of the relevant literature. They will be expected to demonstrate an element of originality in their argumentation, a comprehensive knowledge of the subject, and a highly focussed and well-structured dissertation
Learning Outcomes
- Complete a substantial and comprehensive piece of written work incorporating material from a wide range of sources.
- Deploy arguments and develop logically presented original conclusions in a clear and coherent and comprehensive manner.
- Engage in original research indicating an extensive background of independent reading.
- Observe the accepted standards of scholarly presentation.
- Show a critical grasp of the state of knowledge in areas relevant to their project and apply this to a sustained argument in a substantial piece of work
