Overview
This module will prepare you for the thesis stage of the National EdD (Wales) by introducing you to key concepts and approaches in educational research as well as developing your critical skills. You will study the theoretical underpinnings and ethical principles of educational research, as well as key research approaches, methodologies and methods. Teaching and learning will involve synchronous and asynchronous online activities, with opportunities to connect with the National EdD community both online and in person. You will undertake your own independent study with the support of an academic tutor. Assessment is via the submission of a research plan for your thesis.
The content of the taught module focuses specifically on preparing students for the thesis stage of the National EdD (Wales) by introducing them to key concepts, approaches and methods in educational research. Indicative content includes: 1. Foundations of research in education: the nature of educational research and key theoretical debates therein; understanding and critically evaluating educational research; research design. 2. Undertaking research in education (part 1): key methodological approaches and methods of data collection; ethical principles in education research; reviewing literature and establishing a theoretical framework. 3. Undertaking research in education (part 2): practicalities of educational research including sampling and selection of participants; data reduction, analysis and representation; researcher positionality and drafting a research plan.
Assessment Strategy
The aim of the assessment is to prepare and scaffold the writing of the thesis and for the candidate to pilot one of the instruments to be used after gaining ethical approval.
