Emily is a Reader at the Centre for Health Economics and Medicines Evaluation, Chair of the Bangor University Researcher Development & Concordat Group, and an Honorary Research Associate at the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, University of Liverpool. In 2021 Emily was awarded Health and Care Research Wales Rising Research Star and in 2022 she participated in both the Welsh Crucible and Aurora Leadership Programme for Women.
Emily’s research interests and expertise include preference elicitation and the influence of human behaviour on the cost-effectiveness of interventions. She currently holds a five-year Health Research Fellowship awarded by Health and Care Research Wales to investigate the economics of rapid diagnostics to reduce antibiotic prescribing in Wales (TRaDe); and is co-lead of the NIHR Grace Project, creating patient-centred infrastructures to enhance informed consent and improve patient experience of radiotherapy for gynaecological cancers . Emily is keen to advance interdisciplinary research of global health concerns. In 2021 she set-up the Bangor University Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Research Interest Group and in 2023 became a founding member of the Wales Active Travel Research Consortium (ATLAS). Emily also supervises several research students conducting research in preferences for healthcare delivery and benefit-risk assessments of treatments.
Emily graduated in Economics at the University of Liverpool and started her career at the University of Manchester, before taking her position at Bangor University. She completed her doctoral research in behavioural economics and health psychology of medication adherence. Emily has over 70 published papers and conference proceedings and edited health technology assessment reports for the All Wales Therapeutics and Toxicology Centre (AWTTC) for several years. More recently, she has led on bi-lingual (Welsh & English) public engagement activities for children and adults to learn about Health Economics at National Festivals and University Community Days. Emily was an inaugural member of the International Society of Medical Adherence Research (ESPACOMP) ECR committee. Currently, she is a member of the Health and Care Research Wales Faculty and Chair of the Doctoral Fellowship Awards Panel. She is also a member of the LISTEN, FASAR & GRRAND (NIHR) Trial Steering Committees, Bangor University Athena SWAN working group, and the Bangor University healthcare and medical sciences academic ethics committee review panel.

As part of Bangor Science Festival, researchers from CHEME invited visitors to explore the world of health economics through interactive activities and discussions. Attendees engaged in hands-on exercises designed to illustrate key economic concepts such as cost-effectiveness, resource allocation, and healthcare decision-making. The session encouraged children and their parents to think about the challenges of balancing NHS costs through engaging and accessible activities.
