Professor John Parkinson
Deon y Coleg / Athro
Rhagolwg
John is a behavioural psychologist with a research focus on the interface between cognition and emotion, particular with respect to health promotion and illness prevention. He is interested in how motivational signals are generated, how they interact with ongoing cognitive processes and how this affects behaviour. The integration of dual-process theory with contemporary approaches to behaviour (such as COM-B) is of particular interest. His research interests include: the influence of motivational states on cognitive processes such as attention, memory and decision-making; the effect of positive emotional states on cognition; the role and nature of stimulus-induced behaviours (including motivational arousal and craving in addictive behaviours). John is the Director of the Wales Centre for Behaviour Change and collaborates with the Public Health Wales Behavioural Science Unit.
John is a member of the Clinical, Health, & Behavioural Psychology and Social Neuroscience research groups.

Cyfleoedd Project Ôl-radd
Self-funded (inc. agency-funded) projects:
I welcome informal enquiries from prospective PhD students interested in projects related to health-related behavioural science. In particular, behaviour change and motivation - understanding what behaviour change techniques work in specific sitatuations (e.g. healthy lifestyle). A specific focus on health and food - how do we change behaviour to promote sustainable and future-proofed diets and lifestyles.
Please submit a draft research proposal (1-2 pages) to the above email address.

- BU-IIA Funded Project: Covid-19’s transition to endemicity in Wales and Kentucky
As we move towards the endemic phase of Covid-19, personal protective behaviours are becoming optional guidance, rather than mandated rules. In this new environment, understanding people’s behaviour and how they conceptualise the balance of personal and social rewards and risks, is an important priority for public health. We aim to help shape public health initiatives through two surveys, enriched with qualitative interviews, examining people’s attitudes and behaviour in Wales and Kentucky. Like Wales, Kentucky has a large declining coalfield region, which has faced significant public health challenges before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. The project aims to identify the sociodemographic and attitudinal factors associated with how people are reacting to Covid’s transition to endemicity in the two countries.
The project will aim to deepen our collaboration with partners in Public Health Wales and in Kentucky, while also building towards a strong REF impact case study and further grant capture. Two related outcomes are (1) to understand what factors support collective population behaviours, such as those seen during Covid-19, and might also be required for future challenges such as the climate crisis or in responding to world conflict. And subsequently, (2) a more systematic understanding of how to communicate risk to different societal groups and hence how to promote healthy behaviours (including Covid-19 PPBs) across Wales.
Funding awarded through the Bangor University Innovation and Impact Award (Research Wales Innovation Funding). Value = £42,000

Disgrifiad
MhiSA is a three year project promoting science and research partnerships in the area of mental health between the countries of South Asia and the UK, underpinned by a collaboratively-developed strategy.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has identified mental health as a global priority (WHO, 2016) and has a Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan 2013-2020 that identifies both effective leadership, enhanced information systems and research for mental health as key objectives. Low and middle-income countries (LAMIC) often struggle to provide adequate mental health services. The countries in the British Council’s South Asia region which includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Iran, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka have all been categorised as LAMIC, and each represent an opportunity to enhance and improve understanding of and intervention for mental health issues in their population.
The remit of MhiSA is to to identify identify contextualised research to create a voice and collective wisdom, support long-term action plans, provide information and inform policy development.
