Overview
The outcome statements from Future Nurse Standards (2018), together with annexes A and B will be used to structure the course content. Content may include but is not limited to: Intelligent kindness, person-centred care, collaborative working (with patient and Multidisciplinary team -MDT), beginning to explore role in supporting the learning of others, apply evidence to the principles of person centred care, developing and extending personal sphere of influence as a leader The principles of safe and effective administration and optimisation of medicines in accordance with local and national policies and demonstrate proficiency and accuracy when calculating dosages of prescribed medicines (Standard 4.13) Pharmacology and recognition of the effects of medicines, allergies, drug sensitivities, side effects, contraindications, incompatibilities, adverse reactions, prescribing errors and the impact of polypharmacy and over the counter medication usage (Standard 4.14) Patient care/Fundamentals of care: Initiation of person-centred assessment and care planning, patient moving and handling, nutrition, recording and interpretation of clinical observations, recognising and escalating signs and symptoms as appropriate (psychological and physical), assess and instigate treatment related to tissue viability under supervision. Person-centred assessment of respiratory care, continence assessment and management, catheterisation, Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) and manual evacuation, stoma management. Rehearse and practice (under supervision) venepuncture and cannulation, Nasogastric (NG) percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) insertion and management, Blood glucose measurement (BMs), chest auscultation. Achievement level specific to field, specific content including but not limited to: Patient care Patient handling, person-centred planning, symptom management, venepuncture and cannulation, NG/PEG insertion and management, BMs, chest auscultation Communication and assessment Harm prevention and risk management Mandatory Basic Life Support, blood transfusion, Electrocardiogram (ECG), complex wound management, Intravenous management Accurate and contemporaneous nursing documentation, record keeping (Principles of administration, to meet EU Directive for general nurses). Nursing in relation to: general and specialist medicine and surgery, child care and paediatrics, maternity care, mental health and psychiatry, care of the old and geriatrics, home nursing (to meet NMC EU Directive for general nurses).
Assessment Strategy
-threshold -Grades: D- to D+ Understanding of the facts and principles specific to the topics covered in this module and the outcomes being assessed. Students will be required to achieve a minimum of D- grade in the assignment to in order to pass.

Learning Outcomes
- Application of relevant interpersonal and therapeutic skills required to demonstrate effective, evidence-based, patient-centred care and achieve all proficiencies within the Once for Wales 2020 Clinical Placement Assessment Document and Ongoing Record of Achievement.
- To begin to display required theoretical and clinical knowledge and psycho-motor skills in the performance of nursing assessments, interventions and evaluation; act as a role model for others.
- To engage in teaching patients and others with minimal guidance.
- To meet the level of proficiency in relation to medicines management in the student’s chosen field of practice within the limits of the role of the student.

Ongoing record of achievement of proficiencies. Completion of part 2 of the All Wales Practice Assessment Portfolio of Proficiencies for Registration through assessment of clinical and therapeutic skills, interpersonal and professional skills as outlined in Annex A and B of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Future nurse: Standards of proficiency for registered nurses. Students will be provided with relevant practice placements to be able to demonstrate the required attitude, competence, critical knowledge and skills, which are essential to providing safe and effective care to meet the physical and mental health needs of patients/clients. During clinical placements students will be supported by Practice Supervisors and assessed in practice by Practice Assessors against the NMC Standards of proficiency. Students are expected to apply their theoretical learning to practice and subsequently draw on their practice learning experiences within their summative theoretical work, demonstrated through assessment in practice, achievement of proficiencies and development of an evidence-based critically reflective portfolio. During the second year the student is expected to have attained sufficient proficiencies to reflect practice experiences gained.
